What drives the cost in Perth
Reinforcement spec
Perth councils increasingly ask for SL72 mesh on standard driveways and SL82 with a thickened edge where the crossover carries vehicles heavier than a passenger car. Upgrading mesh adds roughly $6–$10 per m²; a proper thickened edge adds $450–$800 flat depending on driveway length.
Pump vs barrow access
If a truck can reverse straight onto the pour, you save 15–20% on labour. Wheelbarrow-only access to a rear driveway can add $15–$25 per m² and stretch the job by a day. Concrete pump trucks resolve access but add around $700–$1,200 to the day rate — often the right call for tight blocks in Fremantle, Subiaco and inner-city terraces.
Removal of the existing slab
Breaking out and removing an old driveway typically adds $30–$50 per m² including tip fees. Older Perth driveways poured before the 1990s frequently contain no reinforcement mesh at all, which makes removal faster but disposal heavier. Bring this up in the quote — some concreters price it separately and some fold it in.
Ground prep — sand vs clay
The Bassendean sand along the coastal plain (Yanchep down to Golden Bay) needs 100–150mm of compacted road base under the slab. The reactive Guildford clay through the eastern corridor (Ellenbrook, Aveley) requires more careful compaction and sometimes a moisture-controlled sub-base. Poor prep is the single biggest cause of Perth driveway cracking within five years.
Sealer grade
Perth's UV intensity is high year-round and destroys water-based acrylic sealers within a single summer. Insist on a two-coat UV-stable solvent-based sealer applied 21–28 days after the pour. This adds $5–$8 per m² but doubles the reseal interval to 3–5 years.
Process

Site prep and excavation
Strip topsoil and organic matter down to firm subgrade — usually 200–250mm below the finished surface for a 100mm slab plus base. Anything that will decay must come out.

Base preparation and formwork
Lay and compact 100mm of road base in two lifts, plate-compacted to at least 95% density. Set formwork to the finished level with a 1:60 minimum fall away from the house. Install the crossover to council spec at the property boundary.

Reinforcement and pour
Position SL72 or SL82 mesh on 40mm bar chairs so it sits mid-slab. Pour and screed a 25–32 MPa mix (32 MPa if you want the harder wearing surface). Bull-float, then wait for bleed water to disappear before edging.

Finishing
For plain: broom or trowel finish. For exposed aggregate: apply retarder immediately after floating, wait 4–24 hours depending on ambient temperature, then wash off the top skin. For honed and polished: cure for 28 days, then diamond-grind and polish in progressive grits.

Cutting control joints
Saw-cut joints 1/4 of the slab thickness deep within 12–24 hours of the pour. On a 100mm slab that's 25mm deep. Spacing 3–4m maximum. Missing this step or cutting too late is why so many DIY-adjacent Perth driveways develop random cracks in year two.

Cure and seal
Damp-cure for 7 days with hessian and plastic — critical in a Perth summer. Leave the sealer for 21–28 days after the pour so trapped moisture can escape. Apply two coats of UV-stable solvent-based sealer, second coat perpendicular to the first.
Perth-specific considerations
- Perth's UV load destroys water-based acrylic sealers in a single summer. Always specify a solvent-based UV-stable sealer.
- Coastal salt spray from Cottesloe down to Fremantle attacks unsealed and under-sealed concrete edges. Reseal every 2–3 years within 5km of the coast, every 3–5 years further inland.
- The reactive Guildford clay through Ellenbrook, Aveley and the eastern foothills demands more thorough base compaction than the Bassendean sand along the coastal plain — the sand actually behaves better for driveways.
- Dark aggregates (charcoal, near-black) get painfully hot on west-facing driveways in a Perth summer — surface temperatures above 60°C are common. Consider mid-tone earth colours for anything the family walks on barefoot.
- For crossovers, most Perth councils either build the crossover themselves (charged to the owner) or approve a licensed private contractor. Confirm the process for your specific LGA before pouring.

Why do so many Perth driveways crack?
Three reasons in order of frequency: control joints cut too late or too shallow (or not at all); base preparation skimped on reactive clay ground; and shrinkage from a wet mix cured in high summer heat without hessian. A properly designed slab from a competent concreter will show only fine hairline shrinkage cracking, most of it inside the control joints where you want it.
