What drives the cost in Perth
Grinding stages
Each grind pass is a separate labour cost. Single-stage (100 grit) is the cheapest — matte with visible aggregate outlines. Two-stage adds a 200-grit pass for a smoother matte. Three-stage adds a fine polish at 400 grit for a soft sheen without going full mirror. Each extra stage adds $8–$15 per m².
Aggregate choice
Honed concrete only looks as good as the aggregate you reveal. Cheap crushed rock produces a dull finish; selected river pebble, imported granite chips or feature glass produce a designer look. Premium aggregate can add $15–$30 per m².
Densifier vs sealer
A lithium densifier penetrates and hardens the surface itself — no film, no sheen change, but stain resistance improves and the surface dust-locks. Costs $6–$10 per m². For anything short of a full polish, densifier is the right choice in Perth's UV environment; surface sealers on honed concrete tend to blush inside a season.
Slab flatness
Honing amplifies every high and low spot in the finished slab. A concreter honing a poorly screeded slab will grind deep into the high spots and barely touch the lows — patchy result. Getting the pour dead flat costs an extra hour of finishing labour and saves thousands in remediation.
Cure time before honing
The slab must cure a minimum of 7 days before first grind, ideally 14. Rushing this destroys diamond pads and produces a smeary finish. Plan the job around the cure window.
Process

Base and pour
Same as any structural driveway or floor — 100mm base compacted, SL72 mesh on chairs, 32 MPa mix for the harder wearing surface honing benefits from.

Precision screed and float
Screed and bull-float carefully — any waves in the surface will show after honing. Skilled concreters run a straightedge across the wet pour and correct high spots before power-trowelling.

Cut joints and cure
Saw-cut control joints 1/4 slab depth within 12–24 hours. Damp-cure for a minimum 7 days, ideally 14. Longer cure = harder surface = cleaner honed result.

First grind
Diamond-grind at 100 grit to remove the top paste layer and expose the aggregate. This pass produces the most dust — expect the crew to use a vacuum-shrouded grinder or wet grind to control it. Fills any pinholes with a matching slurry.

Subsequent grinds
200-grit for a two-stage matte finish. Optional 400-grit for a soft sheen. Each pass reveals a smoother, more refined surface. Between passes the crew inspects and re-fills any voids that opened up.

Densify and protect
Apply lithium densifier while the surface is dry and clean. Two coats, second coat only after the first has fully absorbed (30–60 min). No film, no colour change — just a harder, less porous concrete surface. Ready for foot traffic in 4 hours, vehicles in 24.
Perth-specific considerations
- Honed concrete stays significantly cooler than dark exposed aggregate in Perth summer — the matte grey reflects UV better than pebble finishes.
- The Perth building sand aggregate common in cheap ready-mix is not premium honed material. Ask what aggregate is going in the mix before pour day, not after.
- Salt spray in coastal suburbs (Cottesloe, Alkimos, Golden Bay) attacks unsealed honed concrete slowly but visibly — reapply densifier every 3 years within 5km of the coast.
- The reactive Guildford clay in the eastern corridor will crack any driveway that ignores it, and cracks read especially badly on a honed finish. On clay ground, insist on more control joints, not fewer.
- West-facing honed driveways in mid-tone grey stay walkable barefoot in summer — a rare property for any hard finish.

Honed vs exposed aggregate
Exposed aggregate has more texture and grip — better for wet driveways and pool surrounds. Honed is flatter, more refined, easier to sweep and hose clean, and more architectural. Honed costs $30–$50 more per m².

Is honed concrete slippery when wet?
A two-stage matte honed surface has comparable slip resistance to smooth-trowelled concrete — safe for driveways in normal conditions. A three-stage polished finish is noticeably more slippery when wet and not recommended for exposed outdoor pours. For pool surrounds, choose exposed aggregate or a textured finish instead.
How long does honed concrete take to install?
The pour itself takes a day. The mandatory 7–14 day cure follows. Honing takes 1–2 days depending on area and number of grind stages. Total elapsed time is 10–17 days from pour to walkable finished surface. Plan accordingly if the driveway is your only vehicle access.
Does honed concrete need sealing?
It needs densifying, not sealing. Surface sealers on honed concrete tend to blush and go patchy in Perth's UV. A lithium densifier penetrates the concrete itself, hardening the surface and closing the pores without leaving a film. Reapply every 3–5 years inland, 2–3 years coastal.
Can existing concrete be honed?
Sometimes. If the existing slab is structurally sound, at least 100mm thick, and has good aggregate in the mix, it can be ground back to reveal a honed finish. The catch is you don't know what aggregate is in there until you grind. Test a small area first. Older Perth driveways often have poor-quality aggregate and honing exposes it — not always a good look.
